Can I submit a translation of a scholarly or technical text?
No. Please submit a literary translation of a text that is poetry, prose, creative nonfiction, or a hybrid genre.
What if the story, novel or poem I am translating is longer than 5 pages?
You may submit an excerpt of a longer piece. Simply indicate that it is an excerpt.
Can I submit a translation of a text someone else has already translated and published?
Yes.
Can I submit a translation of a text into a language other than English?
No. Our judges speak a finite number of languages.
Do you accept coauthored translations?
Your literary translation may be collaborative with another student (who will be named as co-submitter), but may not be collaborative with a professor or other non-student.
Is there a minimum page length?
Yes, the minimum is 3 pages and the maximum length is 5 pages.
What do you mean “submit two documents”?
Please submit one document that contains your literary translation and a second document that contains the original.
Does my translation need to double-spaced?
It can be either double-spaced or single-spaced.
If I am submitting five pages of poetry, do the poems all need to be from the same author?
No, the poems may be from different authors; but they should all have been written in the same original language.
Do I need to acquire the rights to translate my text?
No, you do not. This translation is purely for our educational purposes and we do not plan to publish them.
Is it okay if I have already published my translation?
No. Your translation submission should be unpublished, as one of the goals of the award is to encourage new literary translations by emerging translators.
Will my literary translation be judged solely on its linguistic accuracy?
No. Judges will determine the aesthetic and literary criteria according to which they evaluate submissions.
